Harnett County’s longtime Director of Elections opted to step down from her post last week rather than help facilitate the May 8th vote on the anti-gay marriage amendment.

Sherre Toler said while she was especially proud of operating the election’s office in a fair manner for more than a decade, she could not remain silent about the ballot initiative defining marriage as between one man and one woman.

Raleigh, N.C. — As a former model and daughter of a photographer, Lydia Lange has been the subject of thousands of pictures. She posted many of them on her personal Facebook page and fashion blog. Little did she know, someone was copying her photos and posting them online under the name “Jenny.”

The 25-year-old says she first heard about this mysterious Jenny in September after one of her fans, who has been following her career, alerted her to the website.

“At first, I didn’t think it was that serious,” Lange said.

Later that night, she and her husband looked at the website and realized 90 percent of the pictures were taken from her Facebook profile.

“(I realized) it had to be someone that knew me really well,” Lange said, describing her “sheer horror” upon seeing the website. “I just knew it had to be someone close to me.”

During the summer of 2011, Michelle Bachman’s campaign rolled out an online video advertising campaign exclusively for Republicans likely to caucus living within one hundred miles of the straw poll in Ames, Iowa.[1] In the months leading up to the caucuses Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign purchased ads that ran before all YouTube videos watched by voters in Iowa and New Hampshire.[2] Meanwhile, through sophisticated voter modeling, targeted communications based on voters’ political interests, and tracking the attitudes of supporters over the course of two campaigns, Romney’s campaign orchestrated his near-victory in the 2012 Iowa caucuses.[3]

Underlying all of this is a vast data infrastructure that has made targeted online advertising and marketing possible, and has contributed to a revival of field campaigning over the last decade.[4] Online advertising and field campaigning rely on voter modeling based on hundreds of data points culled from surveys, public records, and commercial information sources such as credit histories. This data details the location, demographics, political affiliations, social networks, behavior, and interests of citizens.

In the remainder of this Essay, I discuss the history of political data, focusing on the recent proliferation in voter data and development of new voter-modeling techniques. I conclude with a discussion of the ways these data practices undermine privacy and democratic practice, even as they increase participation and voter turnout.

Gathering and acting on data about the electorate has a long history, but the sheer expanse of data now gathered and stored about the electorate and the modeling and targeted communications it supports are qualitatively new. Both political parties, as well as a host of commercial firms, have amassed enormous national voter databases that they maintain and provide as a service to candidates from mayoral to presidential races. There are a number of different sources of this political data. The core of these databases are public data collected from local, state, and federal records, which include information such as party registration, voting history, political donations, vehicle registration, and real estate records. This data is supplemented with commercial information such as magazine subscription records, credit histories, and even grocery “club-card” purchases.[5]

These data are continually updated during campaigns through the efforts of thousands of volunteers. In the final two months of the 2008 presidential election, for instance, Obama’s millions of volunteer field canvassers gathered over 223 million pieces of information that are now stored in a database owned by the Democratic Party.[6] Parties carry these databases across election cycles and make them available to their candidates running for office at all levels of government, who in turn continually update the voter files.[7]

Data becomes meaningful only through voter modeling. After the midterm elections, consultants for both parties began to more systematically tie these models to actual data on voter attitudes and behavior. Through much of the last decade campaigns were swimming in data that were not tied in any meaningful way to voter attitudes or behavior. What proved effective was distilling hundreds of data points into simple categories of voters: likely supporters, those that can be persuaded, and those supporting another candidate. For example, the 2008 Obama campaign hired a consulting firm, Strategic Telemetry, to create its voter models.[8] The firm began by surveying a random, representative sample of the electorate. The firm then looked for correlated data points among Obama’s supporters and undecideds. Strategic Telemetry then built models of voters from these combinations of data points and layered them onto the voter file, generating a composite score of likely support for Obama on a zero-to-one-hundred scale for every member of the electorate. The firm then continually polled the electorate and incorporated the results of field canvasses to refine its models.

The Obama campaign targeted priority individuals residing in heavily Republican districts, and focused on neighborhoods with low voter turnout but high numbers of likely supporters. The Obama campaign also developed its online advertising strategy using these voter models and targeting strategies, including using geo-location targeting made possible by IP addresses to display ads to individuals residing in congressional districts with high concentrations of Democratic voters and favorable demographics.

Can't Hack It: State Minority Leader Joe Hackney won’t seek re-election

As the UNC system faces pervasive state budget cuts and tough choices to compensate for the loss, one of its allies in the legislature has announced the end of his political career.

N.C. House Minority Leader Joe Hackney, D-Orange, said in a statement Thursday morning he would not run for re-election.

“Joe has always been a tireless supporter of the University and his retirement leaves a big hole that will be hard to fill,” said Hannah Gage, chairwoman of the UNC- system Board of Governors.

Hackney is one of the last prominent University supporters to leave the N.C. General Assembly.

Yates Occupy Group Avoids Jail Time----One Defendant Is Missing

Judge Charles Anderson awarded four deferred prosecution verdicts and three prayers for judgment Monday for charges filed in the Nov. 13 occupation of the vacant car dealership building on Franklin Street in Chapel Hill.

One defendant - Kassandra Ofray, 21, of Pittsboro - did not appear in court to answer a breaking and entering charge. Her attorney, Daniel Hatley, said neither he nor her mother has had contact with her, and they have filed a missing persons report. Anderson issued a warrant for Ofray's arrest and set bail at $200.

More than a dozen people filled two pews for the hearings, laughing at times in response to attorney questions or witness answers. A protest planned for outside the courthouse did not happen.

The brief building takeover has divided local residents. An internal review upheld the police raid as appropriate, but a town advisory group wants an outside investigator to help compile a factual timeline of events. The Chapel Hill Town Council was expected to vote on that Monday night.

In separate hearings Monday, defendants Ellen Crawford, 23, of Richmond, Va., Eva Jones, 22, of Chapel Hill, David Maliken, 24, of Carrboro and Monica Ganguly, 29, of Chapel Hill received deferred prosecution on a single charge each of misdemeanor breaking and entering. They did not have to admit guilt, and the charge will be dismissed if they are not charged or convicted of another crime over the next year.

Ganguly delivered a short statement to the judge to say she was "entering a plea into a system I have no faith in to deliver justice."

Man Dies At Chapel Hill Homeless Shelter

A man who was staying at the shelter for the homeless at 100 W. Rosemary St. died in his sleep, according to police.

The man, identified as Stephen Christopher Barber, 45, was found dead by his roommate at the shelter Monday morning, said Lt. Kevin Gunter of the Chapel Hill Police Department.

"His roommate went to wake him up about 5:30. He said he's normally up by then," Gunter said.

There was no evidence of foul play, and he did not report he was sick, Gunter said.

The medical examiner will perform an autopsy.

Panel puzzled at rebuff of investigator

he chairman of the committee asked to review the Yates Motor police raid says some members are "curious" after a majority of Town Council members indicated last week they will likely oppose the committee's request for an outside investigator.

In an interview, Ron Bogle, a retired Superior Court judge, said he disagrees that there are no new facts to be learned about the police raid that removed squatters from a West Franklin Street building Nov. 13.

"Here is what is confusing to me," he said. "I assume the council is asking us to do more than accept or check off on the internal review. With that comes the assumption that we have to ask questions, and if we don't get answers, then find a way to get those answers.

HAPEL HILL – A record-setting number of inquiries were made into the purchase of the longtime Chapel Hill bar and beer garden He’s Not Here, resulting in multiple legitimate offers for the business.

Now one offer has been plucked from the pack. The bar is expected to sell Wednesday to a former University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill football player and a partner, according to a broker handling the sale.

The business was listed on the website of the restaurant brokerage firm National Restaurant Properties with an asking price of $165,000. The site says the bar owner was “not interested in negotiating,” and was looking to sell the bar, “as is.”

“We had in excess of 200 inquiries on the property, which is a record-setting amount, mainly because of the popularity (of the bar), and also the fact that somebody took the liberty to put it on Facebook and Twitter, a combination of those things,” said Neal DePersia, broker-in-charge of the Cary office of the firm. “Word got out, and kind of people ran with it, since it’s such a popular place,” he added.

The business was described on the site as a “famous college bar with lots of character and a 35+ year history” and with a total annual revenue of $400,000.

Store owner, retired deputy killed in Orange County shooting

Cedar Grove, N.C. — Two people were killed Wednesday afternoon in what appears to be a robbery turned shooting at a thrift store in northern Orange County, a source close to the investigation told WRAL News.

One of the victims is retired Orange County deputy Skip Wade, said the source, who asked to remain anonymous. A family member said the other victim was Phillip Earl Johnson, who owned the Week in Treasures thrift store, near the intersection of Carr Store and Mill Creek roads in Cedar Grove.

One died at the scene and the other died at Duke University Hospital in Durham, the source said. Both suffered multiple gunshot wounds.

Chapel Hill-based pharmaceutical company Cempra has priced its upcoming initial public offering at between $11 and $13 a share, according to a filing Friday with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission .

The company is offering 6 million shares and has applied to list its stock on the Nasdaq global market under the symbol “CEMP,” the filing says.

At those prices, the offering would range from between $66 million and $78 million, though those figures are before fees and other such expenses.

John Edwards has a life-threatening heart condition that requires a medical procedure and his trial has been delayed, according to reports Friday.

In Greensboro, N.C., U.S. District Judge Catherine Eagles disclosed that two cardiologists wrote to her that the former presidential contender and senator has a medical procedure scheduled next month, so starting his trial on Jan. 30 would “reduce the chance for success,” WRAL reported.

The doctors said Edwards, 58, is currently on medication for the heart condition, the details of which weren’t discussed.

“The letters from Mr. Edwards’s physicians are pretty clear this is a serious condition,” Eagles said, according to the Raleigh News & Observer.

His attorneys wanted Edwards to have a 60-day extension to his case. Eagles said the earliest the trial could begin is March 26, according to WRAL. She asked Edwards’s attorneys to give her a medical update on Feb. 28, the News & Observer reported.

Judge in NC hears bid to delay John Edwards trial

Police setting up a sting in a restaurant parking lot had a description of the man who used the Internet to solicit a 15-year-old girl for a sexually explicit photo shoot. Still, they didn’t expect Santa Claus.

Police arrested John Thomas Peters, known as Santa John on the Triangle Santa Buddies website, at the shopping center on Highway 64 and Lake Pine Drive in Apex. When they set up the Thursday sting, police expected a man named Brad Taylor to enter the McDonald's restaurant. But before contact was made, the suspect contacted the victim and asked her instead to meet him in the parking lot, giving her a description of his car.

With undercover officers close by, the teen walked out when his car pulled up. As she got to the passenger door of the car, police apprehended a 70-year-old man who plays Santa at shopping malls during the holidays.

“He didn’t come into the McDonald's like we thought he was going to,” said Apex Police Captain Ann Stephens, who emphasized that the girl was safe at all times. “As soon as she got to the vehicle, undercover cops walked up behind her.

A Cary man known for portraying Santa Claus at malls was arrested Wednesday on child sex charges, authorities said.

John Thomas Peters, 70, of 113 Crestpoint Court, is accused of engaging in inappropriate online conversations with a 15-year-old girl.

Apex police said they were contacted by the girl's mother who said Peters starting communicating with her daughter through a modeling website.

"My daughter had pictures on two modeling websites," the mother of the alleged victim told WRAL News.

On Dec. 29, the teen struck up a online conversation with Peters, the mother said. At the time, he was using the screen name "Brad Taylor," she said. He said he wanted to take photos of the girl, but the conversation soon charged.

"The conversation got more and more graphic, sexually graphic," the mother said.

Occupy Chapel Hill protesters decamp

Pallets were picked up and tents taken down Tuesday, as Occupy Chapel Hill-Carrboro closed its encampment.

The group had been camping on the plaza outside the Franklin Street post office since October. Members decided last week to focus on other initiatives such as programs aimed at preventing foreclosures and homelessness.

“The camp was a great start to this,” said Rob Haith of Durham, who joined Occupy in November and works at UNC-Chapel Hill as an IT technician. “It was like a beacon to people ... (but) getting rid of the encampment is going to let us refocus our energy.”The group will continue to hold meetings and other events on the plaza and plans to have roving encampments throughout Chapel Hill and Carrboro in the next few weeks.

About 10 people showed up to take down tents, almost outnumbered by media members documenting the cleanup.

Anal Easely: State Bar suspends Easley's law license for one more year

Former Gov. Mike Easley will remain without his law license for another year under an order issued this week by the North Carolina State Bar.

The State Bar filed a formal complaint against Easley last month, seeking disciplinary action for his conviction for campaign fraud.

Easley entered an Alford plea to one felony count of certifying a false campaign finance report in November 2010. In an Alford plea, a defendant pleads guilty, while maintaining his innocence, and admits it is in his best interest to take the plea deal because there is sufficient evidence to find him guilty.

Easley's law license was suspended shortly after the guilty plea, pending the conclusion of formal disciplinary proceedings

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Former presidential candidate John Edwards says he has been diagnosed with a medical condition that would make it difficult for him to attend his approaching criminal trial over campaign finances and is asking for it to be delayed.

In a motion filed Thursday, Edwards' lawyers asked a federal judge to delay the start of the Jan. 30 trial for at least two months. They did not disclose his illness and filed sealed records with the court.

"The Defendant has a medical issue ... that will prevent a trial of this matter during the January 2012 Criminal Term," the motion says. "The failure to grant a continuance would be likely to result in a miscarriage of justice."

Members of the defense team could not immediately be reached for comment.

Federal prosecutors did not take a position on the medical issue.

Things are looking up for the Chapel Hill and Carrboro Human Rights Center.

Following a decision last month by the Abbey Court Condominiums homeowners’ association to force the HRC to leave the complex, the nonprofit center has likely found a new home – one that the HRC plans to use to offer expanded services, including a long-awaited day-laborer center.

Judith Blau, director of the HRC, said the center is under contract to purchase a house at 107 Barnes St., with closing expected very soon.

A medical doctor and former Duke University cancer researcher who quit last year after it was revealed that his résumé was inflated and some of his research was badly flawed has agreed to settlements in at least 11 malpractice cases against him, according to the N.C. Medical Board.
According to filings listed on the board's website, payments were made on behalf of Dr. Anil Potti of at least $75,000 in each of the cases.
The settlements were confidential, and it's unclear whether they involved some of his research subjects or simply his patients. The payments were all made in September and were for incidents occurring between November 2007 and July 2009, according to the online records.

CHAPEL HILL -- Occupy Chapel Hill-Carrboro will remove its tents from Franklin Street next Tuesday, but members say the movement is still alive.The group voted to end its encampment outside the downtown post office after the Chapel Hill-Carrboro NAACP asked it to temporarily move for this year's Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration on Jan. 16. The celebration starts on the post office site, officially called Peace and Justice Plaza, where the tents have been pitched the past three months.The group will continue to hold its meetings at the site, while it looks for an indoor space and launches a program to help people facing foreclosure.

Richard Stallman Was Right All Along

Up until relatively recently, it's been easy to dismiss Richard Stallman as a paranoid fanatic, someone who lost touch with reality long ago. A sort of perpetual computer hippie, the perfect personification of the archetype of the unworldly basement-dwelling computer nerd. His beard, his hair, his outfits - in our visual world, it's simply too easy to dismiss him.

His views have always been extreme. His only computer is a Lemote Yeelong netbook, because it's the only computer which uses only Free software - no firmware blobs, no proprietary BIOS; it's all Free. He also refuses to own a mobile phone, because they're too easy to track; until there's a mobile phone equivalent of the Yeelong, Stallman doesn't want one. Generally, all software should be Free. Or, as the Free Software Foundation puts it:

As our society grows more dependent on computers, the software we run is of critical importance to securing the future of a free society. Free software is about having control over the technology we use in our homes, schools and businesses, where computers work for our individual and communal benefit, not for proprietary software companies or governments who might seek to restrict and monitor us.

I, too, disregarded Stallman as way too extreme. Free software to combat controlling and spying governments? Evil corporations out to take over the world? Software as a tool to monitor private communication channels? Right. Surely, Free and open source software is important, and I choose it whenever functional equivalence with proprietary solutions is reached, but that Stallman/FSF nonsense is way out there.

On Saturday December 31, 2011, I walked into the Subway at Southern Village and presented this coupon sent to me by "the" Subway clearly stating that I can buy any two subs for the price of one.

There are no stated restrictions, nothing that says anything about not using this coupon in relation to other specials. I've been going into a lot of Subways lately for the two dollar six inch sub specials since it's a great deal on food, and I've been in this exact Subway many times. I presented my coupon to the worker behind the counter and asked for two subs, which he started to make. Then the manager who later told me his name was "Abdul" took the coupon and told me that he "couldn't combine two specials". I explained how there were absolutely no restrictions listed on the coupon, but he refused to give me what I think I was supposed to get with the legally and unsolicited coupon that arrived in my mailbox.

The prosecution and defense teams in the murder trial of Laurence Alvin Lovette Jr. agree that the shooting death of University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill student body president Eve Carson more than three years ago was a tragedy.

But that's the only thing attorneys for 21-year-old Lovette agree about with the state.

They argued Monday before a crowded courtroom that included Carson's parents and brother and Lovette's mother that their client could not be linked beyond a reasonable doubt to Carson's March 5, 2008, slaying and that there are still unanswered questions about that morning and about key witnesses.

After 43 witnesses and seven days of testimony, it's now up to a jury of seven men and five women to decide whether Lovette is guilty of first-degree murder and several other charges in Carson's death.

"What the defendant did to Eve Carson was greedy, miserable and cruel. It was useless, and that's what murder is," attorney James Rainsford told jurors in closing arguments that lasted nearly four hours. "The evidence presented in this case allows us to literally look back in time to March 5, 2008, and look as these tragic events unfolded."

Commentary: What happened to the "three white men" supposedly running from Frasure's house after the shooting? It's like murders don't happen in Chapel Hill and when they do (now with sparkling regularity) they get swept under the rug so as not to scare UNC parents and benefactors.

Mario Dante Ramsey, the man charged with the first-degree murder of Drew Christopher Frasure on Dec. 11 in Chapel Hill, made his first appearance in Orange County District Court on Monday afternoon.

Ramsey, 16, who is being held without bond in the Orange County Jail, walked into the courtroom in an orange jumpsuit and nodded at three or four people in the gallery.

District Court Judge Joe Buckner told him he was charged with first-degree murder and said that he could be sentenced to death if convicted of the charge.

Buckner assigned the Capital Defender’s Office to represent him since it is a potential death penalty case. The Capital Defender’s Office will then appoint someone to represent him.

Buckner warned Ramsey not to talk to the case with anybody but his attorney, and said he will consider bond at a hearing Thursday.

A jury is poised to consider the fate of a man accused of killing the student body president at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Orange County District Attorney Jim Woodall said in his closing argument Monday that the evidence clearly shows

Laurence Lovette robbed, kidnapped and shot Eve Carson on March 5, 2008.

Woodall said Lovette and a co-defendant killed Carson because she had seen their faces. Carson’s ATM card was used to withdraw $700 the night she died and another $700 after her death.

Defense lawyers said the state’s key witnesses had reasons to lie and suggested a DNA swab linking Lovette to Carson’s SUV had been mishandled.

If convicted, Lovette does not face the death penalty because he was a minor when Carson was killed.

A student at UNC Chapel Hill says he learned a real-life lesson that he didn't sign up for after he was pulled over by police for something he definitely did not do.

"It was one of those moments where I paused and was like 'did this just happen to me,'" said Cameron Horne.

Saturday night is a night Horne doesn't think he'll ever forget and not for all the right reasons.

"I noticed blue lights," said Horne. "They pulled behind me and an officer didn't approach me he just told me to put my hands outside the window."

Then, what happened next, Cameron says was humiliating.

"I was made to back up very slowly. I was backing up, backing up, backing up. And once I got to a certain point, I was told to get down on my knees," said Horne.

Cameron says he's no criminal. He's into studying. In fact, the 20-year-old is geography major.

Ramsey, 26, who was taken into custody at his home without incident Friday, is charged with one count of first-degree murder in Frasure’s shooting death.

Frasure, 41, was shot to death at his apartment, 199A Ashley Forest Drive, in Chapel Hill, about 12:20 a.m. Sunday.

Ramsey’s criminal record includes convictions for breaking and entering and possession of stolen goods, according to the N.C. Department of Corrections.

Officers found Drew Christopher Frasure dead of a single gunshot wound inside his apartment at 119A Ashley Forest Drive around 12:20 a.m.

Police have obtained warrants for Ramsey, who is charged with first-degree murder. He is believed to be "armed and possibly dangerous" and is believed to frequent the Durham area, police said.

In a 911 call released Tuesday, a woman visiting a friend who lives in a nearby apartment told a 911 dispatcher that Frasure had been shot in the face.

The prosecution rested in the Laurence Lovette trial Thursday afternoon and the defense called no witnesses. Closing arguments are expected to begin Monday.

Investigators have said Lovette and another man, Demario Atwater, kidnapped the 22-year-old UNC student body president from her Chapel Hill home on March 5, 2008 and then drove her around in her SUV to various ATMs in Chapel Hill and Durham to withdraw cash from her accounts.

They said the pair then killed her and dumped her body on a Chapel Hill street.

Earlier this year, Atwater took a plea deal on federal charges related to the Carson's kidnapping, carjacking and murder, and is currently serving a life sentence.

Police are asking for help trying to find three suspects in the fatal shooting of a Chapel Hill man.

Drew Christopher Frasure, 41, of 119-A Ashley Forest Drive, was shot in the face and killed around 12:15 a.m. Sunday. Police spokesman Sgt. Joshua Mecimore said Frasure's death was not random.

In a 911 call released Tuesday, a witness reported seeing three young white men run into Frasure's apartment.

The witness and her friends heard a shot and then saw the three men flee on foot.

The witness said Frasure was shot in the face but alive when she called police.

"(Frasure) knows who it was," the 911 caller said.

Eve Carson begged for her life before her killers shot her and asked them to pray with her, according to one of the murderers who testified at the trial of the other.

The popular University of North Carolina student died three years ago after dying from multiple gunshot wounds in 2008, after two men kidnapped her in an attempt to rob her, reports Fox News.

Prosecutors charge that Laurence Alvin Lovette Jr. and Demario James Atwater kidnapped Eve from her home, took her in her car so she could get them cash from the ATM, and then took her to a place where they shot her five times.

Atwater is serving two life sentences after pleading guilty to the murder more than two years ago, reports AP.

He was testifying at the trial of Lovette, who faces life in prison if convicted of first-degree murder.

Jason McNeil, one of Lovette’s friends, also testified that Lovette had called him when they issued the arrest warrant.

Lovette told him, “Before (Lovette) even shot her, he explained, she was saying, ‘Let’s pray,’” Fox News reports.

CHAPEL HILL - Police released no new information Monday on the weekend shooting death of a 41-year-old Chapel Hill man.

Officers found Drew Christopher Frasure dead from a gunshot wound at 12:20 a.m. Sunday at his home at 119-A Ashley Forest Drive.

The shooting did not appear to be self-inflicted, and the incident did not appear to have been a random act, police spokesman Lt. Kevin Gunter said.

The shooting is the second unexplained death in Chapel Hill in the past three weeks.

Police said they also have no new information to release on the man found dead Nov. 19 in Bolin Creek.

Sgt. Shane Scott Pease, of A2652 Bigler St. at Fort Bragg, was discovered by a jogger around 9 a.m., lying in the creek just north of the intersection of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Hillsborough Street.

A man testifying in the trial of Laurence Alvin Lovette Jr. testified Tuesday that Lovette told him that Eve Carson pleaded for her life in the moments leading up to her shooting death three years ago.

"Before (Lovette) even shot her, he explained, she was saying, 'Let's pray,'" 20-year-old Jayson McNeil said, recounting a March 12, 2008, conversation he had with Lovette, a lifelong friend, about the crime. "She wanted them to pray together."

The conversation between Lovette and McNeil happened the same day Durham police arrested Demario James Atwater in the case. An anxious Lovette called McNeil seeking help to find a place to hide, McNeil said.

"He stated that (police) had gotten (Atwater)," McNeil testified. "He kept saying that, 'They got him. They got him.' He was telling me they got Rio."

Univerity Professor Says: Don't Send Gifts To The Troops Because They Don't Deserve Them

I read in Tuesday's Iowa State Daily that the College Republicans have begun collecting sundries for U.S. soldiers serving in Afghanistan and Iraq. Why? Doesn't the U.S. Army victual its soldiers? Don't their families send them yuletide goodies? Aren't GIs paid enough to buy what they need, and even what they want?

"As Republicans we believe in charity," stated Jeremy Freeman, a member of the College Republicans. Donating toiletries, boxed and canned foods, socks and beanies to U.S. soldiers who can already deodorize themselves, who eat better than the poorest Americans and who are gallantly garbed, is an eleemosynary travesty.

Necessities should be doled out to people who really need them and who might get them if not for the hundreds of billions of dollars being funneled to the Pentagon in the greatest squandering of money on the planet. If anything, Republicans should sympathize with veterans struggling to find employment, a challenge that may daunt the discharged soldier, who might wish he had reenlisted. Soldiers are to Republicans as fetuses are to them: prized. But once out of the womb-like army, Republican solicitude for hapless veterans goes where extracted zygotes go.

"We get to show the troops we still appreciate what they're doing for us," said another College Republican. What are they doing for us? Nothing. But against us they're doing a lot: creating anti-American terrorists in the countries they occupy. Said the same College Republican, "It can't be fun to be away from your family for the holidays. As if American soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan had been conscripted? They chose to leave home.

Why do Republicans care so much about the military? Because the military-industrial complex is dear to their simplistic laissez-faire fantasies: a bottom-line patriotism that excludes the people at the bottom.

Commentary: this story is pure ~~spin~~ outright lies. The families are there to ask Purdue to either approve the bill of do nothing which will allow the bill to stand as is.............but of course, our local media puts political spin on the story................

Several relatives of people who were murdered hope to persuade North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue to veto a bill that would essentially repeal a 2009 law designed to address alleged racial bias in death penalty cases.

The family members of the murder victims planned to meet Monday with Perdue before holding a news conference in Raleigh.
